How to experience flow at work (and beyond)

A few months ago, I ventured to Utrecht, the Netherlands, to record a podcast episode with a collaborator and friend.

Before we started recording, she asked if I’d like to pull a card from the inspiration deck she kept on a shelf near the recording equipment. Naturally, I said ‘yes’.

The card I pulled was OPEN DOOR. As soon as she read the accompanying text aloud to me, I felt my perspective shift. I knew this information would change my life.

Which closed doors are you banging on? it asked. And which open doors are waiting for you, offering flow, ease and synchronicity?

Thinking of our choices and opportunities in life in terms of open doors and closed doors is a powerful metaphor. Looking back, I could see that I had at times spent years of my life banging with my entire physical strength on doors that were firmly closed. And had ignored open doors, for an array of reasons. In my professional life and my personal life.

So what do I mean by ‘closed doors’ and ‘open doors’? What’s an ‘ajar door’? And what does it take to ensure…
