Sunday, I spent the day in bed.

All day, except for a shower and a few minutes staring into the fridge before returning to bed with tea and snacks.

This is not like me. It was a gorgeous early spring day, the kind that would usually have me out on a hike in the hills followed by catching up with my husband’s family for Easter lunch.

But three weeks ago, I injured my left knee in a skiing accident. After major surgery on 20 April, I have a recovery period of approximately eight months. I woke up Sunday with a headache and no motivation to rouse. So I didn’t.

The timing of my injury was interesting (“interesting” in this case meaning fucked):

my husband left for 3 months in Australia one week prior

our insurance changed last year meaning I will be liable for a sizable chunk of the cost

my visa is still a long way from being processed

I have been in this country for a year now and still feel like a misfit

Stripped of my usual coping strategies — beach walks, hikes in the canyons, skiing, surfing, a normal-looking yoga practice — as I lay…
